Ghana has taken a decisive step toward implementing its first Marine Protected Area (MPA) with the inauguration of the Marine Protected Area Management Executive Committee (MPA, MEC).
The Committee was officially inaugurated and sworn in by Hon. Emelia Arthur, with H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang present to lend her support, underscoring the national importance of the MPA initiative.

The inauguration signals Ghana’s transition from declaration to implementation placing governance, coordination, and accountability at the centre of the next phase.
The MPA MEC brings together key institutions, traditional authorities, community representatives, and partners, reflecting a shared responsibility to manage and protect marine resources within the Greater Cape Three Points Area.

The Committee is mandated to provide strategic direction, coordinate implementation efforts, oversee governance processes, and ensure effective monitoring and compliance across the MPA.
Hen Mpoano continues to support this process through our role in stakeholder and community engagement, working alongside the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Fisheries Commission, and partners to strengthen implementation on the ground.

With the MEC now in place, the focus shifts firmly to delivery ensuring that the MPA achieves its objectives of rebuilding fish stocks, protecting marine ecosystems, and sustaining coastal livelihoods.
