Modeling coastal land use scenario Impacts on Ecosystem Services Restoration in Southwest Ghana,West Africa

A recent study co-authored by Hen Mpoano’s Stephen Kankam and international collaborators has modeled future land use scenarios in Ghana’s Greater Amanzule wetlands.

By analyzing the impact of urbanization, agriculture, greening, and restoration strategies, the study reveals how critical ecosystem services (ES) like food, fuel-wood, carbon sequestration, and recreation may be affected. Results show that urbanization diminishes all ES, while landscape restoration holds promise if mangrove protection is prioritized.
