Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are essential tools for conserving biodiversity, safeguarding fish stocks, and sustaining the livelihoods of coastal communities. However, successful conservation goes beyond designation effective governance, enforcement, and community engagement are critical to ensuring long-term impact.
Hen Mpoano, as an implementing partner, is proud to support the Beyond MPA Designation in Ghana project, a seven-month research and development initiative under the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP).
This project seeks to bridge knowledge gaps, strengthen governance structures, and foster collaboration among key stakeholders to enhance the first prospective MPA in Ghana and it’s management after a decade of strategic efforts to get it’s designation.
Project Objectives
The Beyond MPA Designation in Ghana project aims to:
- Assess Existing Strategies – Evaluate current MPA implementation efforts to identify best practices, challenges, and areas for improvement.
- Stakeholder Mapping – Identify key actors in MPA governance and define their roles in conservation and enforcement.
- Public Awareness & Education – Examine the level of marine conservation awareness and recommend strategies for enhanced community engagement.
- Strategic Policy Recommendations – Develop informed policy suggestions to strengthen MPA governance, enforcement, and inter-agency coordination.
- Roadmap for Sustainability – Create a long-term action plan to guide the establishment and management of Ghana’s first network of MPAs.
Impact & Engagement
Through this initiative, Hen Mpoano will engage fisheries authorities, local government, civil society organizations, and fishing communities to ensure that MPAs are not just legally designated but actively contribute to conservation and sustainable fisheries. By fostering inclusive decision-making and knowledge sharing, this project will help lay the foundation for a robust and resilient MPA network in Ghana.
As the project unfolds, stakeholders will have opportunities to contribute to its outcomes, ensuring that MPAs serve both people and nature. Stay connected for updates on this transformative journey toward a healthier and more sustainable marine ecosystem.
