Hen Mpoano, under the Sustainable Oceans Project (SOP), has developed this policy brief titled “Mangrove Benefits to Seafood Systems” which emphasizes on the vital connection between healthy mangrove ecosystems and the sustainability of Ghana’s coastal fisheries.
This brief outlines compelling research evidence showing that mangrove forests provide critical feeding and breeding habitats for fish species, contributing to greater fish abundance and more resilient seafood systems. These ecosystems not only support biodiversity but also play a key role in sustaining the livelihoods and well-being of coastal communities.
To secure these benefits, this brief calls for urgent action. It recommends that the Government of Ghana, in collaboration with coastal stakeholders, enforce stronger regulations to halt ongoing mangrove deforestation especially in areas experiencing over-exploitation. It further advocates for increased investments in mangrove restoration to help recover degraded sites and upscale conservation efforts along Ghana’s coastline.
This policy brief provides a roadmap for integrating mangrove conservation into national fisheries and coastal resource management strategies, ensuring long-term ecosystem services and food security.
