Call for Consultant: Design and Construction of Depuration Systems

Overview:

Hen Mpoano, in partnership with the Environmental Justice Foundation, and CEWEFIA, is implementing a three-year Sustainable Ocean Project (SOP) in Ghana. The project aims to build grassroots capacity for a sustainable ocean economy through inclusive and effective coastal ecosystem management. As part of this endeavor, two depuration systems will be constructed at Kpomkpo and Tsatsukope.

The purpose of the assignment is to address the issues of contamination as a result of the vast number of people living in catchment areas that drain into coastal waterways and/or the substantial rearing of animals, sewage-derived microbial contamination of shellfish in the Lower Volta River Estuary.

Over the years, clam processors have been leaving the harvested clam in a basket in the river for some number of days to clean the clams from sand within the gills and contaminations. This practice does not purify the clams completely since they are still left in the same contaminated water.

Responsibilities of the Consultant:

  1. Planning:
  • Gather and compile relevant data regarding the depuration systems’ requirements.
  • Consult with relevant institutions and agencies for input and recommendations.
  1. Site Selection and Permissions:
  • Identify suitable locations for the depuration systems, ensuring compliance with environmental laws.
  • Consider access to utilities and infrastructure, such as water supply, electricity, transportation logistics, and waste disposal.
  1. Design and Construction:
  • Conceptualize and design the depuration systems in collaboration with experts and stakeholders.
  • Utilize local materials to construct affordable and efficient systems.
  • Integrate solar-powered recirculation systems.
  1. Training:
  • Provide comprehensive training to clam harvesters and processors on the usage of the depuration systems.
  • Train the co-management committee on facility management and maintenance of the system.

Expected Deliverables:

  1. Conceptual design of the depuration systems.
  2. 2 functional depuration systems.
  3. Training manual for system usage and management.
  4. Operational certificate.
