Every child has the Right to education, and a child labour free zone offers every child that opportunity.

The Securing Child Rights in the Fisheries Sector (SECRIFISE) project is piloting a Child Labour Free Zone in Moree in the Central Region to curb the high prevalence of child labour and trafficking within the community.  This idea was conceived during a learning visit organized by the SECRIFISE project for community leaders from source communities within the Central Region to a model community (Kpando- Torkor) along the Volta Lake, where anti-CLaT initiatives have proven successful and sustainable in reducing the practice to the barest minimum.

The child labour free zone model involves all stakeholders like teachers, parents, children, unions, community groups and local authorities, who are convinced that child labour is unacceptable and are willing to work together to ensure all children school going age go to school.

In view of this a durbar was organized to create awareness and sensitize relevant stakeholders and opinion leaders who would contribute to the success of this process in Moree.
The occasion was graced by Officers from the Department of Social Welfare, Ghana Education Service, the office of the Chief Imam for the local mosque, Traditional Council and the Chief Fisherman. The stakeholders pledged their support for the success of the model within their community.

(SECRIFISE) is a 3-year European Union funded project that seeks to contribute to the prevention of child labour and trafficking (CLaT), protection of CLaT survivors and prosecution of perpetrators of the act in Ghana.
